  • Macro Practice - Community Development - needs assessment in tribes and communities - focus is on sustainable development and self empowerment.
  • Write and implement a training manual for representatives of our beneficiary organizations as well as community leaders to be trained on Sustainable Food Gardening. Essentially, this would be the objective. This process will involve the following steps:

Feedback Project

  • Research and review current material available on Food Gardening (some of this can be done beforehand).
  • Talking with community groups about the level of understanding, challenges with food gardening that have been experienced in the past and to look at ideal learning methods – develop a training objective.
  • Develop a workshop format, practical workshop or a series of workshops that meet the training objective.
  • Test the workshop by running it (or running elements of it) in a pilot format.
  • Finalize the training manual (facilitators guide).
  • Run the workshop.
  • Train others within Feedback to run the workshop.

Location: Durban

University: University of KWAZULU-NATAL

Library: University of KWAZULU-NATAL Library

Agency: Mohau Children Center

Location: 699 Block NN Soshanguve, 0152 Gauteng, S. Africa (close to Pretoria)

The Mohau Centre is located on the complex of Kalafong hospital, in the township of Atteridgeville (pronounced Atridgeville).

Objectives:

  • Direct Practice - Art therapy, running groups, in-service training for staff
  • Note from Director 2006-2008
  • The student social worker’s first challenge was to bond with the 45 children and 11 caregivers who call Mohau home. The first 24 hours were spent with the Mohau family, mainly learning names, language and new ways of play, as well as observing how a family of 56 interacts on a minute to minute basis.

The student (2007) utilized the clinical technique of memory/life books with each child, as well as developed a group curriculum for girls on life skill development. The student undertook collaborative learning (with peers), around the issue of psychological trauma of the children, behaviour adjustment, and their response to therapeutic intervention. The development of a synergistic team of caretakers was essential to the wellbeing of the children. Orphanage - HIV Positive Children (infants to age 18)

Transportation:

  • Minibus taxis - Although using the minibuses is an option, they are a little complicated to use and the drivers have a strong reputation for unsafe driving.
  • Private taxis - are not highly regulated (which can be dangerous) and can be very expensive. We would recommend one driver who was recommended to us. This will make it easier to get around for the first few days

Ernest - (contact info. coming)

  • Hiring a car (renting) - This can be a viable option if traveling as a group. Monthly rates are very reasonable and having your own car gives you the flexibility to be able to do some sightseeing. Budget, Avis, and Tempest all rent cars in South Africa on a monthly basis, but you must have an International Drivers License to rent from them. We were able to rent from Imperial Car rental on a monthly basis without an Int'l License, but it cost us a little more.

-Note: Driving in South Africa is on the left side of the road, which is pretty easy to get used to, but almost all the cars in SA have manual transmissions. Learn in the States if you can!!! (RA)

Housing:

We discovered all too late that we are paying way too much for our furnished apartment. An unfurnished apartment in Pretoria rents for around R2-3000. This means that a good price for a furnished apartment is around R5-9,000. We were paying 9,000 for our apartment, but it was not a high end apartment. We will be moving next week to a B&B in Waterkloof Ridge - a very nice neighborhood, and reducing our rate to R9,000 for the remainder of our stay (a month and a half). We will have more information after the move. (ER)

The head of the Department of Social Development is named Vivian Taylor. They do not have a Department of Social Work, but a Department of Social Development, and Social Work falls underneath that umbrella. Ms. Strugeon informed us that she would pass along your business card to Ms. Taylor. On the other hand, we informed her that we would provide you with the above contact information we obtained as well.
